Imperial High School Syllabus
Our program is designed to provide students with opportunities to participate in both group and individual activities, which are physically challenging, mentally simulating, and socially engaging. The emphasis is not only for students to participate in physical activity during school years, but to maintain and integrate healthy habits that last a lifetime.
PE CLOTHES
-
Gym shorts or sweats- must be red in color.

Shirts must have an Imperial P.E department logo.

Gym shoes- no sandals, boots, and no person may go barefoot.

Gym uniform can be purchased at Imperial High School’s Main Office.

We recommend writing your name on all your belongings.

Gym clothes should follow school dress code.

Dirty or torn uniforms are not acceptable.

Towels and uniforms must go home on Fridays for washing.

The school provides locks for students to use. The student is accountable for this lock. If it is lost, stolen, or misused the student will pay a replacement fee of $8.00 in the main office.
GRADING
Each student starts each semester with zero points and their grade depends upon how many points they earn during the semester. Points will be earned in the following manner.
A 10-9 points per week
B 8 points per week
C 7 points per week
D 6 points per week
F 5-0 points per week
A student’s grade at the quarter and semester will be determined by dividing his/her point total by the total possible number of points.
*In addition, the SWIMMING CURRICULUM grading policy will apply during the swimming unit.

Tardiness-every three unexcused tardies. 5 % reduction in semester grade.

6 or more non-suits will result in failure of the students Quarter/Semester grade.

½ a non suit will be issued for Sandals, not in P.E. uniform-which includes wrong colored shorts/sweats or student not wearing P.E. shirt.

Habitual offenders of ½ non-suits will result in their being issued full Non-suits.

ABSENCES
A student with an excused absence will receive credit for missed participation by writing a one- page article summary. If a student is absent on a cardio assessment day, a two-page article summary or two, one- page article summaries will be turned in to receive credit. The article subject matter must be related to health, sports, fitness, nutrition, or recreation.
Article summary directions:

Read an article on approved subject matter.

Turn in report to P.E. teacher.
Article summary reports are due within 1 school day of returning to class. Each article must be attached to the article summary. The article summary length is dependent upon class activities missed. When absent, check with teacher to find out what activities were missed.
MEDICAL NOTES
-
All notes must be initialed by an administrator/ counselor before the P.E. class period.

A student with a parent note must dress out and give the note to their P.E. teacher before class to discuss the individual situation. Notes from parents, must have a phone number included for note verification. Parent notes may be valid up to 3 days. If 4 days or more are needed, a Doctor’s note is required.

A student with a doctor’s note will discuss their situation with their P.E. teacher and may be allowed to complete an alternative assignment.
INJURIES
Students in Physical Education classes must report any and all injuries that occurred during class, to the instructor. Accidents that are not reported cannot be covered by school insurance. Students who go to a doctor on their own without reporting their injury are responsible for their own medical bills.

Article Summary Assignment
Students must turn in two items to the student’s PE teacher:
• A copy of the article, written by the author.
• Article summary report, hand-written by the student.
Frequently asked questions about completing the article summary assignment for make-up work when absent and/or medically excused:
Question: What is an article? Answer: A piece of writing included with others in a newspaper, magazine, or other publication (including on-line sources). For this assignment, students must a choose an article topic that relates to physical activity and/ or health, such as: Fitness, nutrition, sports, healthy habits, injuries, safety, etc.
Question: What is included in an article summary report? Answer: When writing a summary, use sentence and paragraph form. Summary must be hand- written. No typing for this assignment. State the main points of the article read. Make sure to use own words in a simplified, yet complete manner.
• The main idea of the article is conveyed clearly and concisely
• The summary is written in the unique style of the writer
• The summary is much shorter than the original document
• The summary explains all of the important notions and arguments
• The summary condenses a lot of information into a small space
Question: How long should the article summary be? Answer: It depends on the missed participation activity. Most days, a 1 page summary is due. For swimming days, a 1.5 summary is due. Make sure summaries include complete sentences and paragraph form. Writing that is too large or too small and/ or inappropriate spacing will not be accepted.
Question: What should be turned in to the PE teacher? When? Answer: Both the article and the hand-written article summary report (staple together). They must be turned in within a day after returning from an absence.* The same day, if the student was allowed to complete the assignment during class.**
*If absence was excused on MONDAY, and student returned to school on TUESDAY, article summary assignment is to be turned in no later than WEDNESDAY.
**If a student is excused to go to the library, during class, on MONDAY to do an article summary assignment, work must be completed and turned in by the end of the class period on MONDAY (same day). Return the work completed to one’s PE teacher.
